What’s With All The Updos Anyway?

As I was scrolling through my Instagram feed this morning it occurred to me that some of you may be thinking “Dang, what’s up with all these updos?” It’s funny, because I ask myself the same question sometimes! And every time I do, I come up with the same two answers:

1. They are more creative and well, more fun, for ME!

Now, don’t get me wrong, I love seeing a naturalista slay a fro, twist out braid out or head full of rod set curls! There’s nothing quite like it. But for me and my personal hair journey updos are just more fun!

There was a time when I was all about curl definition and achieving the texture I saw on other naturals that I adored.  But then, I just got tired of all that! I finally decided to accept my hair for what it is and started focusing on how I can truly enjoy my hair journey.  My discovery of updos was it!

Once I dove in it was like “Man! I’ve been missing out!” Now I get so easily bored that even when I try to keep it simple and just wear my hair out, at some point in the day I promise you, it will end up in an updo.

2. It inspires YOU with new ideas so YOU don’t get bored on YOUR personal hair journey.

So, I totally get that everyone isn’t like me. Not everyone can appreciate a slew of styles that are a little, well, out there.

Seriously, I know these looks aren’t normal. But what I want to do is to inspire you to STOP putting limits on your styling ability as well as your ability to wear a certain look confidently!  And while that effort might not appeal to everyone, for the individuals that it does, I pray that what I’m doing opens up your perception of what it means to slay so that you realize your own slayage capability, outside of what you may typically see.

Hope this helps clear up any questions in my updo obsession. Lol!

Love you guys!!

French Roll With A a Twist – DIY Tutorial

Good morning beauties!

Today I’ve got a video tutorial for the second top voted style from last week. I played with some different straight hair styles and this one got a lot of attention.

It was one of my favorites because of the chic look and the fact that it took  3 minutes tops!

As for a styling product, this OFX Beauty B5 Weightless Oil Mist is the only thing I used. LOVE this stuff for my straightened hair.

Check out the short DIY video tutorial for this French roll with a twist here.

Fun Flirty Curls on Straightened Hair

Good morning Luvs!

So last night I decided to try out something I haven’t done with my straightened hair, a flexi rid set. Typically I stick with updos when my hair is straight but I thought I’d give it a try.

When I thought about what product I should use to set my hair I wasn’t quite sure what to go with. I was trying to be really careful about not inadvertently changing the texture of my straightened hair back to its curly state by using a product with too much moisture.

I decided to go with the Carol’s Daughter Sacred Tiare Styling Creme. It is obviously Creme based but also on the thicker side so I thought it would be a good choice. I applied the product on each section of hair before installing the rods. I used my usual 7/8″ and 6/8″ diameter and 10″ long rods. I kept the rods in over night.

In the morning I took the rods out and was very pleasantly surprised with the definition. AND my hair was extremely soft!

Next, I separated each curl about three times. I tried not too over separate so that I didn’t create a lot of frizz.

After that I styled my hair by pulling the back up and securing with bobby pins. I love the look of flexi rod curls in my face. Here’s the final look

I’m not sure if these curls will last for the entire day but they sure are beautiful soft and defined now!

Cat Eye

Morning Beauties!

Today I wanted to share one of the makeup products I am seriously loving right now. These “Cat Eye” colored eye liners by Jordana have been giving me so much life!

The colors are nice and bright and glide right on. From top to bottom these beauties are in the colors Future, Orchid, Twilight and Envy.

Here’s a look at how some of these gorgeous colors look on me…LOVE!

I would definitely recommend these!

My Ideal Curly Fro

Hi Luvs!

I hope everyone had an awesome Independence Day! My long weekend started on Friday with hubby and I spending the first half of the day shopping for the new house. I loved pending time with that guy ❤

When I woke up in the morning I really felt like I wanted to go with a simple wash and go for the day. The only problem was we were completely out of Eco Styler which is generally what I would use. I was a little discouraged until I saw this sitting in my product closet

I had used this foaming mousse for a flexirod set and a couple of twist styles but never a wash and go. I decided to give it a shot. I wet my hair in the shower and applied the product using no particular method at all. I just got a hand full of product and ran it through my hair. The results? This BOMB curly fro!

These are the kind of results I would get from a 3rd or 4th day wash and go, the absolute best days for the style as far as I’m concerned. The bonus with this product is I can achieve those same results on day 1!! Not only that but my hair was incredibly soft! No crunch at all to this wash and go!

I was so impressed with this look that I attempted to duplicate it on the Saturday.  Instead of just applying the product to wet hair I tried to add some methodology to the process by sectioning my hair and applying the product to each individual section.  The results were nice but I think my no method messy application on Friday yielded better results

Either way I was very pleasantly surprised with my wash and go results using this product.

5 Extraordinary Crown Braids

Good morning beauties!

This morning as I was styling my hair I had the same thought that I have every morning “How can I take an ordinary style and make it extraordinary?” I am always looking for unique was to take typical styles to the next level.  It’s all part of that whole style innovation that I love.

Well today I decided to go for another unique rendition of the crown braid. I’ve taken a shot at this a couple of times before and although very different and may not be to everyone’s taste I’ve adored all of them.

While the standard crown braid focuses on framing your entire head with one single braid or twist I either add some unique aspects to that method or literally try to envision a crown and duplicate that look. Here’s are 5 of my most extraordinary crown braids (twists).

1.

2.

3.

4.

5.

Different right!? So the next time you go to style your hair try to think of a way you can add a little flare to it and make it your own.

Twisted Updo Tutorial

Morning lovelies!

Today I’ve got a video tutorial for a twisted updo. This look was the #1 voted style from the week that I wore it.

The prep and style time took me about 7 minutes total!

The product I used to get this original look was from the June curlBOX. It’s the Sacred Tiare Styling Creme. This product was nice and thick and offered great shine. It also helped to control my frizz which helped the style look nice and neat. I didn’t use the product in the re-creation video tutorial as its focused on the methodology of how I achieved the style.

3 Ways To Take Your Hair Higher

Hi luvs!

Today I want to talk about 3 easy ways to take your hair styles higher! Ya’ll know how much I love high hair. It has so much presence. It’s daring, bold and down right fierce!  I use a few key methods to achieve high hair that I want to share with you today, all which I’m able to get the most height out of when I style with completely dry stretched hair.

1. Pompadours: This is probably the easiest way that I achieve high hair.  My pompadour method is quick and easy and the hight can be adjusted easily. To see A video tutorial of my go-to pompadour method click here. If you want to surpass my rambling just skip to about 4:25 into the video :o)

2. French roll: The thing I love most about french rolls is the opportunity for versatility, which you can read more about here. Some of my highest hairstyles have been achieved with different french roll variations. The hight is achieved in how high you gather the hair and how loose you roll and tuck the hair

3. Loose flat twists: You can do a million and one things with flat twists, including create high hair! Loosely flat twisting a section of hair up front allows you to form and adjust the hight of your hair easily.

So, next time you’re looking for a style that will command attention, consider taking your natural hair higher with one of these styling methods.
